Prescott Whiskey Row & White Spur Campground 1/30/24

We left Cottonwood this afternoon and headed up to Prescott (Arizonan pronunciation Press-Kit) It was brought to my attention I’ve been misspelling Lake Mead. I guess all those years at Civil War News it’s just been ingrained in me that you spell it like General George Meade 😂

After getting our campsite and finishing up a work zoom meeting, we drove about 2 miles back into town to see Whiskey Row. In 1900, a fire destroyed this downtown area . Fourty saloons popped up in the rebuilding during the gold rush! There are no longer that many saloons but a few remain. It’s mostly tourist shops, but still holds an authentic old west feel.

We went to one surviving saloon, The Palace c. 1877, and had a light dinner and of course some whiskey! The old brothel portion upstairs is now offices. The western movie, Junior Bonner starring Steve McQueen, had parts of it filmed here in 1972. The bar, swinging doors, bar back and many other parts are all original. The staff was dressed in period clothing and it was an awesome experience!

Our campsite is primitive, quiet and private. Sitting by the fire now in 45° and heading into a warm diesel heated van for the night soon.

No little camping hatchet for this VT farm boy. He trucked a full-on splitting maul across the whole country 😂
